Portrait of Ruth Davidson

Great Expectations

A few months ago I was asked to photograph MSP and Scottish Conservative Party Leader Ruth Davidson for Good Housekeeping magazine. Ruth Is expecting her first child in, at this point, a matter of days!

I have photographed Ruth on a few occasions and as always she was a pleasure to work with, very generous with her energy and her time. Which considering she was seven months pregnant at this shoot is even more impressive than usual.

High fives go to Mel, Jess, Cyan and of course Ruth. Baby fives to baby D when she arrives.

Environmental Portrait of Sarah Brown

The unsinkable Sarah Brown.

Back in the early days of June I was commissioned to shoot portraits of Sarah Brown. Sarah is a British campaigner for global health and education, founder and president of the children's charity Theirworld, the Executive Chair of the Global Business Coalition for Education and the co-founder of A World at School. She was a founding partner of Hobsbawm Macaulay Communications, a public relations company. At least according to wiki . Her husband has also apparently done quite well for himself.

I don't know what I expected but the woman I met was relaxed and tolerant of having her portrait shot but it was obviously a process she was indifferent to. She was quiet but I expect anyone that works for her knows she is the boss.

We chat about Scotland versus London and poked fun at a certain politions haircut and comfortably strolled along the North Queesnferry Harbour. All reports are that she was very happy with the results as was my client and that's the business.

The Balvenie Whisky Distillery

Water of Life

I was recently commissioned to shoot portraits and documentary details for a drinks industry client. They had a specific shot list of classic Scottish distillery images which thrilled me to bits. I do love a whisky shoot!

I have done a lot of work with the whisky industry so when they asked if I knew of a more traditional distillery I had no hesitation to recommend The Balvenie Distillery in Speyside. I have shot with The Balvenie on several occasions and their methods of distilling are more hands on than any distillery I have been to (to date). It's the classic postcard distillery. If you are in Scotland I highly recommend you seek them out.

There are LOADS of health and safety issues shooting in a distillery, not least that the dust in the air can be so soaked with alcohol that it becomes explosive! So armed with out vapour alarm and our health and safety vest, boots and expert we shot all stages of the distilling process. The first portraits were shot in pitch black warehouse with 3 elinchrom elb's. The Details were available light with colour balancing tweaked in post.

Editorial Feature - Glenevan Mill

Slow Fashion

A couple of months ago I was asked to head to the Scottish Borders to shoot an editorial feature on Glenevan Mill. Their website says...

"Since its foundation in 1978 among the hills of the Scottish Borders, Glenevan Mill Ltd has been producing exclusive handmade Cashmere knitwear for its discerning clientele around the world. We craft garments for customers with a true appreciation of handmade and slow fashion."

And when these guys say hand made they mean hand made. I watched their knitters in awe as they worked at a level of expertise that is impossible to put into words.

Spent the morning with the lovely Aurélie Auffray as she showed me behind the scenes.

Scotland has a proud history in textiles and the Scottish Borders specifically specalised in Knitwear. From Pringle to Coco Chanel this was a world dominating industry. Sadly in recent years it has been decimated by cheap and cheerful brands flooding the market. Still it is encouraging to see a business like Glenevan hold its own, and it's quality and success are a true reflection of the dedication of this proud team.

Editorial Portraits in the Lake District

Food glorious food

A few weeks back I was asked to head down to the Lake District to photograph Chef, restaurant and food at the luxury hotel 'Another Place'.

If you don't know it the Lake District, it was home to William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin. They call their mountains, fells and most of their lakes are not lakes* It is in the English North West and it is spectacular. It is made so by it's unpredictable weather which I battled to get to my location. Through flood warnings, snow, a small landslide and torrential rain, I made it. Phew.

The restaurant was great, food was lovely and the shoot was made very easy by a collection of equally lovely people.

* They are Tarns or Meres which by all accounts look a lot like lakes.
