We Salute You
Recently I was commissioned to shoot stills and portraiture for the new expression of Pernod Ricard's Royal Salute Whisky. This collaboration between Master Blender Sandy Hyslop and olfactory expert Barnabé Fillion marked what will be a large advertising push for 2018.
This was a shoot in two parts.
Working in and around a film crew who were the primary creatives for the 'lifestyle' shoot, we needed to match their lighting and capture complimentary stills for each scene. As the film crew stepped out to review their footage we, having pre-metered and marked, stepped in to get the shots we needed. It was an operation of military speed and precision.
Our set for the day was the desperately glamorous Inveraray Castle, home to the Duke of Argyll, on Scotland's West Coast. Lighting the library of the 18th century Scottish Castle was no easy task. Gothic architects liked their rooms dark and their ceilings high. But visually the space was glorious.
The second aspect of the shoot for the stills team was a more controllable affair, capturing portraits of the two collaborators in environments that suited their area of expertise. Sandy has a very traditional role as Whisky Master where as Barnabé is more natural and sensory.
To get the portraits we required I needed to whisk away one or t'other of our heroes and shoot single light portraits at three pre-scouted locations while their counterpart filmed solo scenes. While we were under pressure to get these done quickly, one of the benefits of a smaller team is having the luxury of taking things down a notch. With one eye on the clock we took a stroll to our locations with a coffee and a chat along the way. We got the work done and dusted in plenty of time for their next scenes.
Both Sandy and Barnabé were a delight to photograph and the Pernod team as a whole were fantastically organised with a strong sense of the style they wanted.
The results from this shoot have been very well received and I am pleased to say that at no point do I appear awkwardly in the background of any of the motion footage.
